Finish spring cleaning with a closet purge

Cleaning out your closet – this spring cleaning task can give anyone the shivers. However, there are cathartic effects that come along with the act purging, reusing and donating your old items. So stop avoiding the inevitable and make room for a new wardrobe to make the most of summer in Ottawa. The Panoramic Properties blog team has pulled together some sure-fire ways to successfully clean your closet.

Here are some good questions to keep in mind while going through your closet:
·       Does this item fit me right now? (i.e. not when I go down a size)
·       Have I worn this item in the last year?
·       Can I see myself wearing this piece a year from now?
·       Does it work with other items in my wardrobe?

The process of slimming down your wardrobe often takes a few passes through your closet over a few months. Another approach is to break down the job into different elements of your closet. One month, tackle pants, a month later go through blazers and jackets. No matter what, don’t pull out the entirety of your closet. We’ve been there before with everything scattered on the bed and floor, rapidly losing steam. At that point, the only solution is to shove the stuff back in the closet and make it worse than it was to begin with. Keep the jobs small and work section by section.

Cut the extras out by sorting through your clothing and picking out items that you think a friend may like.  These pieces should be nearly new and ready to wear.  We all have pieces like this lurking in the back of our closets, the ‘ten pounds from now’ jeans, that gorgeous dress you wore to two formal events then retired or those killer heels that look amazing but kill your feet.

There’s no need to play favourites with friends about who gets what. Instead, organize a clothing swap with an equal trade system. A clothing swap can be a really fun event and it’s a great excuse to get together. Hosting in your Ottawa apartment is easy. Participants should each bring a maximum of 10 high-quality items to swap. Make a batch of your favourite snacks or drinks, put on a playlist and get to trading. We’ve found that a fashion show will inevitably break out so it’s best to have Madonna’s ‘Vogue’ queued up.

Don’t let the thought of ending up with the cast-off items after the clothing swap discourage you. Instead, think ahead and set up a pickup from the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) Clothesline program. This program comes right to your door to collect your gently used clothing and household items. All profits from the items collected go to support the CDA’s efforts in research and support of Canadians living with diabetes.

Essential Tools for Renters

On the Panoramic Properties’ blog today, we’re covering some practical suggestions for pulling together an apartment-essentials tool kit. Before purchasing any tools, think about the type of projects you’ll be completing around your home. Will these be larger weekend projects that will last throughout the summer, or assembling some flat-pack furniture once a year?  Once you know what you plan to do, here’s our run down of the items that you’ll need:

·       Measuring Tape – If you don’t have one of these already, make sure to purchase one. You’ll be surprised by how often you reach for it once you know it’s there. This is an essential addition to any toolkit and an important tool when redesigning or buying new furniture for your apartment.
·       Hammer – This one really speaks for itself. There are so many practical reasons to get a hammer that you probably don’t need to hear another one from us. If you’ve just moved into your new apartment this is essential for putting together any new furniture or hanging pictures.
·       Nails – Again, these speak for themselves and go hand-in-hand (or head to head) with a hammer. You’ll be glad to have them around for many basic at-home projects.
·       Screwdriver – No need to buy a huge set. Instead, elect for the two essentials: the flathead head and Phillips head screw drivers. These will assist with any small assembly jobs around the apartment.
·       Screws – What’s the point of a screwdriver without the screws? Pick up a small set for a few dollars and this should last you for years.
·       Duct Tape – You don’t need to don your flannel while using this go-to part of any tool kit. Instead, channel your inner Red Green for small temporary repairs with some duct tape.
·       A level – There might be an app for that but having the real thing around is more practical for completing installation of furniture or hanging pictures.

Keep your new items together with a compact and efficient toolkit or box.  You can find just about every colour out there available whether you like the classic red or prefer something bolder like hot pink or electric blue. Resist the temptation to stash your tools loose in a drawer or closet, after all, you want them to help you out on occasion, not add to your day-to-day clutter. Canadian Tire and home repair stores generally offer an essential set of tools that will compliment your needs and your Sudbury apartment perfectly.

Perhaps these new tools will uncover a love of small projects around your Sudbury apartment. Are you thinking of taking up crafting or small carpentry jobs? Share your projects with the Panoramic Properties online community.

If you’re looking for a quiet and clean apartment to call home in Sudbury, then browse Panoramic Properties’ listings. Decorate your Walls Affordably

A low-cost way to give an apartment a new look and feel is hanging art on the walls. You don’t have to break the bank to have one-of-a-kind pieces of art. The Panoramic Properties blog has compiled some easy DIY and online suggestions to help you find the unique pieces of décor that will make your Welland apartment truly feel like home.

Crafting & DIY

Give a thrift store painting a new look by stencilling letters onto the image. Keep an eye out for paint by number vintage painting; you’ll also need letter stickers and spray paint. Next, pick a favourite quote or song lyric to add to the image. Check the full instructions for this DIY project featured on the blog A Beautiful mess.

Don’t ditch your old ratty t-shirt. If it still has a cool logo or image intact, you can stretch the shirt over a simple box frame. Head to Instructables.com for their easy take on this cool project: how to frame a t-shirt on the cheap.

Create simple garlands with twine, coloured paper and yarn. Garland isn’t just reserved for Christmas celebrations. It’s also a fun way to celebrate spring and summer and you can customize pieces as the seasons change.

Order Online

Not feeling crafty? You can still have custom pieces made just for you. Here are some suggestions for unique and affordable wall art that you can purchase online.
The online service Poster Jack uses canvas to transform digital pictures into canvas prints for your walls.  Feel good about supporting this Canadian company that also uses Canadian manufactured canvas.  If you’d rather skip the canvas prints, Poster Jack also offers custom and paint-friendly wall stickers.

Historic prints make for beautiful wall art that’s bound to start a discussion with your guests. Zazzle.ca has a number of posters and canvas prints featuring beautiful shots of Welland that would complement any apartment. Our favourites include a shot of a 1920’s train loaded with massive timbers bound for Welland, as well as a beautiful sketch of the historic Welland Courthouse.

Instagram makes us all feel like professional photographers with cool effects and filters.  All too often these images get stuck on a smartphone and never leave the digital realm. Why not enlarge your favourite shots for a great vignette on the walls of your apartment in Welland. Geeksugar covers a number of affordable options in their article, 12 Ways to Print Instagram Photos.  There’s an especially neat service that lets users create an image of the day calendar. The glossy tear-away sheets are perfect to put on the fridge or even create a wall installation.

We’d love to hear from you about your DIY ideas for wall art. Keep us posted on how your projects turn out. Do you have any suggestions for ways to purchase cost-effective custom prints and canvases?
