As winter descends on St Catharines, we’re seeking out warm and cozy spots to hibernate. There are so many amazing coffee shops to explore in the area. Here are our favourites. Visit them to take off your winter coat for a while as you get cozy indoors with a warm drink, perhaps a treat and a meal, and relax.
Captains Cabin Cafe
There’s a lot to love at Captains Cabin Cafe in St Catharines. If you prefer pairing your reasonably-priced hot coffee with donuts, this is the place! They sell an amazing assortment of house-made donuts and other delectable treats like cupcakes and even “pup-cakes” for furry friends! If that’s too sweet for you, they serve savoury items like sandwiches, too.
Mahtay Cafe & Lounge
Mahtay Cafe & Lounge is a community hub, cafe and market. It’s a great place to visit for delicious cafe drinks like flat whites, lattes and Americanos. You can much on a wide variety of tasty menu items here, like power bowls, decadent sandwiches with flavours like kimcheese and more. Best of all, they pride themselves on being a welcoming and safe space for everyone -- something we could all use a lot more of! They host fun and much-needed community-building events like LGBTQIA+ Conversation Circles, improv nights and open mic events.
Wandering Spirits
Wandering Spirits is supporting the local community and creating a space where all feel welcome. They're a cafe bistro and cocktail bar located in the heart of Downtown St. Catharines. They serve coffee, cocktails, good food, and good vibes. With a daily happy hour featuring $10 cocktails and $5 cans, a large list of alcoholic cocktails with fun names like “Milk Punch” and “The Lost Sailor”, a tight but awesome daytime cafe menu featuring classics like Cortados and Cappuccinos and simple meal items like avocado toast and delicious treats -- you can relax all day and night here.
Balzac’s Port Dalhousie
Balzac coffee shops are always well worth a visit. They tend to be in beautiful spaces with tantalizing menus of coffees, boldly flavoured espresso beverages, a wide variety of teas, sweet treats and savoury snacks. Balzac’s Port Dalhousie location was originally a bank! The charming building was constructed in 1907 and features two stories. You can feel Port Dalhousie’s rich maritime history here, which dates back to 1826. The area is well worth a visit and is considered one of the best preserved 19th-century canal villages in Canada.
Fine Grind Cafe
Fine Grind Cafe is a cozy spot that specializes in coffee drinks, milkshakes and vegan options. They have a pretty big selection of coffee and tea drinks, old-fashioned milkshakes, steamer drinks and ice cream floats. Rozie’s Cafe is a pretty unique spot! They serve a huge breakfast and lunch menu with classics like Eggs Benedict, pancakes, waffles and french toast, soups and sandwiches. What sets them apart is the addition of a Keto menu, gluten-free options and a large coffee and tea menu referred to as Organo which is alkaline coffee and tea that’s infused with medicinal mushrooms. It’s a pretty cool place to get cozy, eat and relax.
Soban Sandwich Cafe
Stop into Soban Sandwich Cafe for a warm drink, a hearty soup and sandwich combo and a delicious dessert on a frosty day.
